Search and Rescue

Tonga Police is the coordinating authority on all search and rescue incidents in the country. It is supported by other local agencies such as the Tonga Defence Services, Coastal Radio, Ports and Authority. Within the region Tonga Police works closely with the New Zealand Rescue Coordination Center.

Specifically within the Tonga Police is the Tactical Response Group established in 2009 and tasked among other functions with coordinating and responding to all SAR reports. The Tactical Response Group is based out of the National Police Headquarters in Longolongo.

While Tonga Police holds the authority over coordination it does not own the necessary assets deployable to such incidents hence the close working relationship with other relevant agencies that do own such capacities.
