Tonga Police Cyber Safety Program

VISION

To promote the safe and responsible use of technology in Tonga

PURPOSE

Raise awareness of the issues facing young people:

  • How young people have fun on line
  • How to help the stay in control on the net
  • How to report when things go wrong

A regional initiative endorsed by the Pacific Chiefs of Police and funded by the Australian Federal Police. The Cyber Safety Program (CSP) is driven locally by the Serious Crime Unit. This Program was piloted in Tonga and two other Pacific Island countries. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness issues facing young people in respect of technology.

Between 2010 and 2011 there was a 740% growth in internet usage. This number is expected to continue still as high-speed internet is introduced in 2013. As internet access and usage increases, and social media sites gaining popularity there is a need to learn from experiences of other countries.

The CSP provides assistance to both parents and children on how to be safe with technology. Please contact our Serious Crime Unit at 23419 for more detail or information if you need assistance.
